In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Alexei Navalny, Francisco Gomez de Villaboa, an urgent border scene, Harold Davi, Chronolog, the Leica M240 M-E, the Intrepid enlarger, photo card services, 700 rubber ducks and a Rocky Nook discount.
- "Alexei Navalny, who has died in prison, was one of Vladimir Putin's most visible and persistent critics," notes the Guardian, which has published Navalny's Life in Pictures today. "He helped foment 2011-12 protests in Russia by campaigning against election fraud and government corruption and a high-water mark in his political career came in 2013 when he won 27 percent of the vote in a Moscow mayoral contest that few believed was free or fair."
- In Public Matter, Magali Duzant presents the black-and-white photographs of the human body captured in the studio by Francisco Gomez de Villaboa. "Where the work comes alive is in moments of unabashed cheek and visual wonder," she writes.
- Associated Press photographer Gregory Bull tells how he captured An Urgent Scene at the Mexico-U.S. Border. "The very best photos sometimes leave the viewer with an unanswered question or simply a feeling," he writes.
- In Apt Eye, Harold Davis composites crops of a photo of his left eye.
- Chronolog "is used by organizations worldwide to create crowd-sourced time lapses that monitor the environment and engage communities in science," the organization says. You can explore a few of them online.
- Kirk Tuck takes his new Leica M240 M-E with a Voigtlander 50mm f2.0 APO lens out for a walk and comes back with a black-and-white slide show. The camera was a Valentine's Day present to himself. Makes you wonder what he got his wife.
- Mike Johnston take a peek at The Intrepid Compact, a 35mm/120mm LED-based enlarger from Britain. "Let me just tell ya somethin': if the Intrepid Compact had come out in 1979, it would have taken the photography hobby by storm," he writes.
- Dan Havlik looks for services printing the Best Photo Cards with the least hassle. Winner categories include Best Overall (Shutterfly), Best Value (Snapfish) and Best Design (Mixbook).
- Astrid Kane tells the story of 700 Rubber Ducks nailed to a board on Divisadero St. by San Francisco barber Shorty Maniace. Photos by Jesse Rogala.
- Rocky Nook is offering 40 percent off during its Presidents Day Sale with coupon code PRESIDENTS.
