In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP's week in photos, Zebus, aquatics, black female photographers, GOATs, your best shot, external SSDs, Elliott Erwitt's house, boredom and a Sling sale.

  • The Associated Press has published the global version of its Week in Pictures. This batch was curated by AP Photo Editor Pamela Hassell in New York.
  • Photographer Rijasolo documents The Zebu War in which the prized cattle are stolen by criminal organizations. "I don't pretend to think that my documentary photography work will be able to change things," he says. "Even so, I'm very attached to the idea that it is us, Malagasy photographers, who should speak about our country, about its social, cultural and economic problems."
  • Steven Bloor presents photos from the World Aquatics Championships where over 2,600 athletes representing 201 countries and the World Aquatic Refugee Team competed in Doha.
  • Sarah Gilbert highlights images from the 1980s-90s by Black Female Photographers published in Shining Lights. The work includes the experimental use of photomontage, self-portraiture and staged imagery, she notes.
  • Jim Kasson considers The Dubious Search for GOATs. "I think the search for GOATs has a relationship to the Dunning -- Kruger effect, which is a cognitive bias in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities," he writes. "So, to a nonexpert, some field may look simple, but to the practitioner in that area, it looks complex."
  • In How Do I Pick My Best Shot? Derrick Story lists three questions you should ask. "One of the things I've observed during lab sessions at our TDS workshops is that many photographers give too much weight to technical considerations and not enough to content and emotion," he writes.
  • Howard Oakley has been Shopping for a Faster External SSD. USB 3.1 Gen 2, 3.2 Gen 2x2, USB4, Thunderbolt 3 and 4. It's complicated.
  • In House for Sale, Mike Johnston rues the sale of Elliott Erwitt's house after the photographer's passing. "If you look through the real estate photos, you'll see the inside of his home studio, which is a treat ... but sad," he writes.
  • Thom Hogan wonders, Has Photography on the Web Gotten Boring? "The net result of a more boring photography Web is that I find myself spending less time browsing the Web and more time working, so I guess there's a positive side to this," he writes.
  • Think Tank Photo is holding a Sling into Spring sale, taking 15 percent off its Sling camera bags. The Turnstyle, Urban Access, PhotoCross and the new PressPass slings will all be on sale through Feb. 29.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
