In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Underwater Photographer of the Year, U.K. power stations, Sidney B. Felsen, Osborne Macharia, Kenny Hurtado, the Fujifilm X100VI, Profoto softboxes and looking at art.

  • Alan Taylor presents the winners of the Underwater Photographer of the Year Contest. Alex Dawson won Underwater Photographer of the Year 2024 for his image of a whale skeleton on the seafloor, beneath the ice, in Greenland. Categories included Wide Angle, Macro, Wrecks, Behavior, Portrait, Black & White, Compact, Up & Coming and more.
  • The Nuclear Sublime is a new photo book by Michael Collins who photographed U.K. power stations armed with a Geiger counter over a three year period. The Guardian has a selection of the images.
  • In The Art of Friendship, Anya Ventura reviews the Getty's new exhibit First Came a Friendship: Sidney B. Felsen and the Artists at Gemini G.E.L.. Gemini was Felsen's lithography studio and he had a camera. "Over some 50 years, Felsen, now 99, documented artists' professional milestones and also captured more intimate, quotidian moments -- breaking bread, listening to live jazz and enjoying family fishing trips in L.A.," she writes.
  • Jackie Andres explores Osborne Macharia's series Daughters of the Rift which "traverses the realms of Afrofuturism and Eastern African geography."
  • In Shifting Perspectives, Rob Haggart interviews Kenny Hurtado about why he walked away from professional photography to become a paramedic. "Being a photographer my whole life was a selfish endeavor," he says. "It was just all about me, all the time."
  • Mike Johnston really likes the new Fujifilm X100VI. OTOH, Chris Gampat found 7 Reasons to Not Upgrade. OTOOH, Kevin Raber raves in Oh Boy, I Have Been Waiting This.
  • Adorama has introduced new Profoto Softboxes featuring a built-in speedring and interchangeable diffusor. Shapes and sizes available include: Rectangular 2x3 feet, Octa 3 feet, and Strip 1x4 feet.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
