Matinee: 'On Becoming a Photographer' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 541st in our series of Saturday matinees today: On Becoming a Photographer with Annie Griffiths.

In this 4:33 video, National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths confesses she got into photography "kind of by accident." She was pursuing her dream of being a writer in a journalism program when she got a camera and took a class to learn how to use the camera.

"Two weeks later I changed my major," she tells us.

She talks about the benefits her profession has showered on her kids, giving them the opportunity to travel the globe where they learned to make friends with the locals rather than live in hotels.

Her kids consequently don't expect everyone to be the same, she says. An open mind, eye-to-eye contact, careful observation and attentive listening all help make connections "beyond what most travelers get to see."

That's what has been her secret in telling stories in photographs that encourage people to learn more about a subject.

"Almost everything's been photographed," she admits. The trick is to bring your own vision to that subject matter.

And if you do that, she notes, "you're never done."
