In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at 500 redheads, flowers, perspective and AI-generated headshots.
- Simon Worrall talks to former National Geographic photographer Keith Barraclough about his project photographing 500 Redheads. "The main criterion is simple: the subjects must be natural redheads (although he does sometimes photograph an older person, who is no longer ginger, holding a photo of themselves from the past)," he writes. But you have to be willing to share something unique about yourself, too.
- Harold Davis showcases Flower Magic in a high-contrast, backlit image of blooms. "Well, flowers are magical," he writes. "So is nature and so are people."
- Suzanne Sease presents Suzanne Saroff's two-part series on Perspective. "As I balance my commercial projects with my own personal work, I have continued to revisit this 'Perspective' concept, as each visit brings me joy and comfort and the most exciting visits do bring me something new," Saroff says.
- Zach Sutton has been Comparing AI-Generated Headshots With Real Headshots. He finds them "cartoony." You can get 150 headshots for $20 but the image size is only 1024x1024. "For the same reason I don't offer passport photos at my studio (because I'm not going to compete with every Staples and CVS offering passport photos for $20), I'm not interested in competing with AI systems generating headshots for a few dollars," he writes. "Instead, my business strategy is to offer a service larger in scope than just a headshot."
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look four years back (the last leap year, that is). And please support our efforts...
