In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Sony World Photography Awards Open Competition winners, medium format, climate resilience, a second lens and battery management.

  • Alan Taylor presents 21 photos by the winners of the Sony World Photography Awards Open Competition. If you've never seen a synchronized dunk on the basketball court, this is your chance.
  • Resolution and Sharpness Are Often the Short Poles in the Photographic Tent notes Jim Kasson after hanging an exhibit of 35 of his prints. Only one of which was medium format, which he's been working in for the last eight years. "I spend a lot of time in this blog testing for the sharpest cameras and lenses," he writes. "But when the photographic rubber meets the road, content trumps both of those."
  • Heidi Volpe interviews photographer Emily Sullivan about covering Climate Resilience for High Country News.
  • Thom Hogan walks through the options for The Second Safari Lens. "There's no one right choice in safari lens pairing," he writes. "It's all about tradeoffs and balances."
  • Howard Oakley explains how to Manage Your Mac's Battery for Endurance and Lifespan. The trick is to rely on Apple's battery management and "don't try to second-guess what it should do and try to manage your battery, but use it normally and with care."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
