In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP's week in pictures, British Wildlife Photography Award, The Black Chord, film simulations, Nikon firmware, the Zhiyun Molus X60 CoB, Critics' Choice Awards and macOS Sonoma 14.4 issues.

  • The Associated Press showcases its Week in Pictures: Global for this week, including the Academy Awards in Los Angeles, Ramadan celebrations an the Fireworks Festival in Mexico, curated by AP photo editor James Okungu in New York.
  • Kate Mothes features winners of the British Wildlife Photography Awards. "The final selection emerged from more than 14,000 submissions, featuring a wide variety of species, terrains and behavior," she writes.
  • In A Who's Who of Black Popular Music, Sarah Gilbert features images from an updated edition of David Corio's The Black Chord.
  • In Why I Like and Use Film Simulations on My Digital Camera, Derrick Story provides some examples of his use of these presets.
  • In The Curious Case of Nikon Updates, Thom Hogan explains why the recent Z8 and Z9 firmware updates are not equivalent. "Nikon uses an independent team approach to cameras," he writes. "It's not the same team working on all cameras, it's individual teams for each camera."
  • Jason Row reviews the compact Zhiyun Molus X60 CoB fill light, "a device source that uses thousands of tiny LED chips to create a continuous, energy-efficient lighting source." The kit contains the light base unit, a large proprietary battery that doubles as a hand grip, a mini reflector with a reversible diffusion dome and a large AC power brick.
  • LensCulture is accepting submissions for its Critics' Choice Awards in which 20 critics will select three photographers each to be featured in a group exhibition at Photo London. Entry is free for single images. Deadline is April 17.
  • Amber Neely reports The macOS Sonoma 14.4 Update Is Breaking Printers for Some Users. "According to a post on Reddit, it seems that macOS Sonoma 14.4 removes the core CUPS software, leaving no way for the printer and Mac to interface," she writes. That's in addition to the previously reported problem with USB hubs in monitors.
