In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at World Nature Photograph Awards, George Hoyningen-Huene, Drew Gardner, K.B. Dixon on Barthes, Claus Bach and a free copyright Q&A.

  • Winners of the World Nature Photograph Awards have been announced, including Tracey Lund for Photographer of the Year for her image Underwater Gannets. WNP's new online store offers affordable prints of some of the winning images, as well.
  • In A Bygone World of Glamor, Mee-Lai Stone showcases George Hoyningen-Huene's images of movie stars, exotic locations and fashion trends from a new book of his work. George Hoyningen-Heune: Photography, Fashion, Film by Susanna Brown will be published by Thames and Hudson on April 30.
  • Kate Mothes features Drew Gardner's Portraits of Black Civil War Soldiers, which are part of his Descendants series matching an old photo of an ancestor with a descendant dressed and posed to match.
  • Mike Johnston found A Great Article About Barthes and 'Camera Lucida' by K.B. Dixon, who "both takes Barthes to task for his faults and flaws holding nothing back -- he is scathing on the topic of punctum and the very word itself -- but he is also lavish in his praise for the book's accomplishments, which he communicates with clear-eyed precision." Dixon's Lucida and Me is included in his book Too True: Essays on Photography.
  • In Gardeners of Counterspace, Nadine Isabelle Henrich presents a few images by Claus Bach, who was part of a collective, of 1980s East Germany. "Calling themselves Bach Gù‚nther Jahn, the collective worked on a range of different photo documentaries on topics such as the dying forests in the mountains of Saxony and the air pollution in Friedrichshain, Berlin," she writes.
  • Greenberg and Reznicki will host their 17th Q&A&Q Free Zoom Presentation today at 3 p.m. ET. "The two of us will one again go over copyright and business issues that concern photographers," they promise. "As always, it's free." Registration required.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
