It's World Backup Day Too Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

31 March 2024

We have to interrupt the Easter Parade to point out that today also happens to be World Backup Day. It's always the last day of March.

That the last day of March happens to be Easter just goes to show you how inconvenient backups can be. They can be so inconvenient that you simply don't bother. Or skip one. Or four.

So while the day is meant to get us all to make a backup of our data, we'd like to suggest you alternately spend some time figuring out how to make backing up your data painless. So that you don't have to be reminded to do it once a year.

We covered the bases last year with tips for using Time Machine, FreeFileSync and our own Mirror Mirror backup macro, all of which we rely on a daily basis.

Time Machine covers everything on all our machines at night while we sleep.

FreeFileSync makes comprehensive data clones between main and backup machines on demand. For example, we run it to sync the local copy of Photo Corners along with some other work we do every morning when we take a break.

Mirror Mirror, our Keyboard Maestro macro, is the tool we use the most, though. Every time we make changes to code or text files, we tap two keys and the new files are instantly copied to external drives. It not only painless but fun.

What about photos?

The camera originals are copied to two (phone files) or three (camera files) external drives, including a network drive. And the edited images are backed up every night with the Time Machine runs.

We lost our offsite backup locations this year so we're still thinking about what to do about that. Meanwhile, we sleep easy around here while our data is being backed up.
