In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Alastair Philip Wiper, Anupam Nath, Patty Carroll, Jim Westphalen, SD card transfers, Leica-capable flashes, a Think Tank Photo deal and Daido Moriyama.

  • In Unintended Beauty, Marigold Warner looks at Alastair Philip Wiper's photographs of the aesthetics of huge factories, research facilities and grand feats of engineering all over the world. "Maybe it's not all beautiful and not everybody will see it as beautiful," he says.
  • Anupam Nath tells how he captured A Buzzy Photo during Holi. "When I saw a swarm of bees attack the man, who appeared drunk and couldn't find his balance, I knew I had my image," he writes. "I did not waste time and immediately started clicking."
  • Kate Mothes looks at Patty Carroll's series Anonymous Woman, which satirically portrays scenes of domestic dismay and disaster trapping a female mannequin. "The mannequin is the 'ideal woman' who does not age, have wrinkles, fat or any other human quality," she says.
  • Vermont-based photographer Jim Westphalen talks about documenting old farmhouses, barns, churches and homes that have fallen into disrepair in this 3:33 Brief but Spectacular segment from the PBS NewsHour:

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
