Matinee: 'Pablo Herrera' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 548th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Pablo Herrera.

This 3:03 video by Noor Dillan-Night is an interview with Spanish photographer Pablo Herrera.

"To be able to capture moments," he explains his attraction to photography, "is the best way to live again [in] the past."

Photography wasn't his first love, though. He had wanted to be a filmmaker, studying cinematography at the University of León and training in scriptwriting, illustration, photography and animation.

But he discovered he could make a movie in a single frame.

That requires a certain understanding. "You need to understand how it's possible to share that moment that for you is important or is beautiful or is horrible using the elements you have in that moment."

And that requires a certain discipline. You have to be aware of what's going on constantly, waiting for just the right moment to act. Photographers, he thinks, would make great hunters. It's the same instinct.

He's primarily a portrait photographer currently working on a series of circus portraits.

"My best advice is: take pictures every day," he says.

A movie a day sounds just about right.
