Matinee: 'Leah Bokenkamp Beach Art' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 550th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Leah Bokenkamp Beach Art.

In this 4:08 video from Marblehead TV shot and edited by James Maroney, Leah Bokenkamp takes us to the beach to see what we can find.

Bokenkamp created Mindful Focus LLC to tie together her varied interests, which include massage therapy, yoga and photography. "Photography has fueled my creative side for many years," she explains.

Every beach she goes to is different, she says, and every tide remakes each beach. She's always taking pictures but, for a while now, she has been gathering rocks that mimic the colors of the rainbow to form what she calls "rainbow creations."

She posted some early ones on social media to lift people's spirits during the pandemic. She has also printed some of them, which she has exhibited.

They aren't all rainbows. Some are shapes, some are landscapes. "It's fun to share it," she says of her photography.

She leaves her creations at the beach. When her friends find them, they ask her, "Is this you?" Other people have been inspired by her work on social media and try it for themselves, which she finds gratifying.

The creations don't last long. When the next tide comes in, they are "reclaimed by the water," she says. That doesn't bother her a bit. "It is kind of fun that it's temporary," she says.

It's the creative spirit that endures long after the creations disappear.
