Matinee: 'Scott Portelli' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 551st in our series of Saturday matinees today: Scott Portelli.

This 1:35 video is a promotion for Aurora Expeditions featuring wildlife photographer Scott Portelli.

"Based in Sydney," he describes himself, "I have traveled the world extensively photographing in some of the most remote destinations, including the Arctic, Antarctica, Galapagos, Azores, Africa and the South Pacific. As a wildlife photographer I have spent hundreds of days in pursuit of different wildlife and been privileged to be up close and personal with many creatures."

In the course of which, he has won some prestigious awards.

But in this video, he's not talking about himself but about taking a cruise to make photographs. And what he does to help.

There are lectures, of course. And then there's the optional Zodiac excursions you can join to motor off the ship on what Huck Finn might have called more simply a raft.

Then there are the Q&A sessions at the bar. Which are more like doing homework for the next day's adventure than celebrating the day's conquests.

But even if a cruise with Portelli isn't on your bucket list, he does float a bit of advice by you in this clip. His best advice, he says, is summed up in three words. "Stop and watch."

Because sometimes the image you set out to capture will just wander into view.
