The Personal and the Political Dominate Kraszna-Krausz Longlist

A focus on the personal and the political with themes including the Holocaust and contemporary space exploration; parental radical politics; the history of Black life and culture; African fashion; and the women of a remote Afro-Mexican village, make up the 20 longlisted titles for the 39th edition of the Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards, the U.K.'s leading prize celebrating excellence in photography and moving image publishing.

Following the longlist announcement, six shortlisted publications, three in the Photography category and three in the Moving Image category, will be announced in late May. The winner of each category, sharing a 10,000 prize fund, will be announced in June. Events celebrating the 2024 awards and the winners will take place in Autumn 2024. Previous winners' events have been held in collaboration with the Barbican and the V&A.

The 20 longlisted publications will be showcased by the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation at this year's Photo London (May 16-19,) at Booth P11.

For the Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards two winning titles are selected annually, with prize money of 10,000 divided equally between the winning title in the Photography category and the winning title in the Moving Image category. Since 1985 the Awards have recognised individuals who have made an outstanding original or lasting educational, professional, historical and cultural contribution to literature concerning photography or the moving image (including film, television, video and new media).

Sir Brian Pomeroy CBE, Chair of the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation, says of this year's longlists, "We're delighted to announce these strong and inspiring long lists of books entered for the Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards this year. We continue to see the highest standard of books about photography and the moving image submitted to the Awards, reflecting a vibrant international publishing and self-publishing scene."

Submissions for the Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards are invited from publishers, authors, collectives and individuals self-publishing their work. Books entered must have been published for the first time between 1 January and 31 December 2023 and distributed and available to buy in the UK. Non-English language books must be accompanied by an English language translation of all text and submissions in the Photography Book award category must contain a significant textual element as image-only books are not eligible. Up to six different titles can be entered with each having a minimum run of 100 copies. There is no entry fee.

A separate judging panel is in place for each of the Photography and Moving Image awards, made up of three internationally recognised experts in their specialist fields drawn from the worlds of fine art, photography, film, galleries, museums, academia and publishing. In the opinion of the judges, winning books should make a significant contribution to the art, history, research, criticism, science or conservation of photography or the moving image. In addition to the visual and written content, submissions are judged on the standards of production, format and design.

The 2024 Photography Book Award judges are Mariama Attah, Associate Curator for Art Collection Deutsche B -- rse and a writer and lecturer with a particular interest in overlooked visual histories; Anthony Luvera, an artist, writer and Associate Professor in the Research Centre for Arts, Memory and Communities at Coventry University, whose long-term collaborative work is exhibited widely in galleries, public spaces and festivals; and EugÈnie Shinkle, a photographer and writer who is Editor of the photobook platform C4 Journal and Reader in Photography at the University of Westminster.

The 2024 Moving Image Book Award judges are Kieron Corless, Associate Editor of Sight and Sound film magazine at the British Film Institute and co-curator of the Essay Film Festival at Birkbeck University and the ICA as well as a writer and visiting lecturer; filmmaker, scholar, composer and theatre director, Dr Victor Fan who is Reader in Film and Media Philosophy at the Department of Film Studies, King's College London; and Head of Screen Arts at the UK's National Film and Television School, Sandra Hebron, who has worked in independent film since the late 1980s.

Mariama Attah, Associate Curator for Art Collection Deutsche B -- rse and Judge of the 2024 Photography Book Award said of the experience, "The range of books and the creativity of some of the publications was unexpected, particularly the self published or collaborative projects. The photographers and designers have shown such talent and vision in creating these small worlds for us to explore. The Kraszna-Krausz Awards are a public celebration of the art form. They are a reminder of the depth of talent and enthusiasm present in the sector and are a great way of encouraging artists to continue making work. And while we are only able to award a small number of books, there are so many books, projects, photographers and designers who I can now refer back to for future opportunities."

Sandra Hebron, Head of Screen Arts at the UK's National Film and Television School and Judge of the 2024 Moving Image Book Award explained, "Film -- and all forms of the moving image -- are so central to all our lives, whether as entertainment, information, personal expression or all of the above. The Awards serve a valuable function in drawing our attention to the many ways in which these very familiar forms deserve our closer attention, as well as celebrating the work of film scholars and film practitioners. I would certainly not have been aware of, never mind read, many of these books if not for the experience of being on the jury."

The call for the 2025 Awards will be issued in November 2024.
