Matinee: 'Father's Day' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 557th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Father's Day.

This 3:26 video by Mike Leonard addresses the challenge children of beloved fathers face on Father's Day. Getting a present.

He remembers his innovative solution as a child, the inspiration coming to him as the drugstore was about to close the night before Father's Day. A bottle of talcum powder. Which his father gratefully received with joy the next day.

Which, he notes, so impressed his younger siblings that they too employed it. Such that the house was unusually supplied with the amusing product.

Until, that is, the kids -- as kids will do -- found it an indispensable aid in chalking the lines for their football field in the back yard.

So it is with children and their fathers.

But Leonard paints this portrait even deeper by revisiting a few of his childhood friends who remember how his dad helped them out.

They weren't his kids, no, but he was a dad. And you just don't slip out of that cape when you hear a call for help. So it is with fathers and children.

Happy Father's Day to everyone who has ever played the part!
