DxO Labs is celebrating its founding 20 years ago with a 20 percent discount on all of its products for the next 20 days. The company also announced a new motto -- "For the passionate photographer" -- that will shape its future roadmap.
In June 2004, DxO released version 1.0 of OpticsPro, its image editing software that was the precursor to PhotoLab. But even then the product distinguished itself by basing its power on modules derived from the company's testing of camera sensors and lenses.
Meanwhile the company continued to expand its services with:
- DxO Mark, a Web site devoted to hardware evaluation
- The DxO ONE compact camera
- The revival of the NikCollection
HIGHLIGHTS
Among the highlights of DxO's timeline are:
- 2004 --The launch of DxO OpticsPro as the only editing software that could correct lens defects in specific lens/camera combinations with laboratory-grade precision.
- 2006 -- DxO Labs launches DxO FilmPack, simulating classic film stocks for the digital era.
- 2012 -- Launches DxO ViewPoint for fixing geometry and perspective, which can also correct volume deformation in an image caused by wide-angle lenses.
- 2015 -- The DxO ONE transformed a smartphone into a powerful little camera.
- 2017 -- DxO Labs buys the NikCollection from Google, breathing new life into the ultimate suite of plug-ins.
- 2017 -- DxO Labs decides the 12th version of DxO OpticsPro would include UPoint and renames its flagship software DxO PhotoLab.
- 2020 -- Using the millions of samples already in its Optics modules database, the French company trains an AI model in images to create DeepPRIME for noise reduction and detail extraction.
- 2021 -- DxOLabs makes their pioneering noise reduction and unrivaled lens/camera profiles available as part of any workflow through the launch of DxO PureRaw.
- 2024 -- DeepPRIME XD2 is released after years of research into the Raw image pipeline. It makes DxO PureRaw4 the industry standard and an important first step in the Raw workflow.
A NOTE
We've been covering DxO since OpticsPro v6. With each release we point out the advantasge of image editing software that starts from the Optics modules DxO creates for each camera and lens it measures.
We often complained, as a careful software reviewer, at the pace of innovation at DxO. As soon as we would be wrapping up a review, the company would release an update. But we were only faking our annoyance. It was exciting to see a company innovate at that pace (and not just squash bugs).
In an era of me-too software products, DxO continues to produce unique applications. PhotoLab remains the flagship Raw processor based on DxO's extensive Optics modules, ViewPoint's volume deformation correction remains unique, DeepPRIME taps into increased hardware power to reduce image defects, PureRaw stands alone as a Raw pre-processor for whatever image editing software you prefer.
And because these innovations rely on the company's Optics modules, they are applicable to some quite old hardware and the images captured on them.
So we remain to this day impressed by the company's continuing innovations. And we wish them another 20 years doing what they do best. Making photography better.

DxO Labs Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary
Everyone Gets 20 Percent Off for the Next 20 Days
Join DxO's celebrations and discover the company's rich history, pioneering approach to Raw processing and its goal of ensuring ultimate image quality for passionate photographers.
PARIS, France -- DxOLabs invites photographers to celebrate its 20th anniversary by offering 20 percent off all of its products for the next 20 days.
Exactly 20 years ago, in June 2004, a new software designed for passionate photographers made its debut: DxO OpticsPro version 1. This was the predecessor of today's DxO PhotoLab, built to give users a level of image quality that was previously unavailable.
Since then, DxO Labs has continued to innovate. It has produced image processing chips for smartphones, created the DxO Mark Web site (a global reference for image quality evaluation) and the DxO ONE (a small, connected camera). It has also revived NikCollection, produced countless exclusive lens profiles, led the evolution of noise reduction technology and produced a range of advanced photo editing software.
To celebrate, DxO offers all photographers 20 percent off all its products for the next 20 days. To take advantage of this offer, photographers should simply head to the DxO Store any time before July 7.
20 years of innovation, expertise and leadership
The origins of DxOLabs can be traced back to 1995 when its predecessor, Vision-IQ, was established whose ambition was to teach computers to see. The result was a system that helped to detect accidents in swimming pools using cameras that required the development of sophisticated corrections. This new understanding of optics tied in with the explosion of digital cameras and DxOLabs was born.
More of DxO's rich history can be found on the DxO 20th Anniversary About Us page, but here are just a few of the highlights:
2004 --The launch of DxO OpticsPro was a revolution. It was the only editing software that could correct lens defects in specific lens/camera combinations, all with laboratory-grade precision.
2006 -- DxOLabs launched DxOFilmPack, a tribute to the timeless magic of film, meticulously recreating classic film stocks for the digital era.
2012 -- Launched as the ultimate tool for fixing geometry and perspective, DxOViewPoint remains the only means of quickly correcting volume deformation in an image. It's a crucial tool for anyone that uses a wide-angle lens or seeks geometrically perfect images.
2015 -- The DxO ONE was like nothing else, transforming a smartphone into a truly powerful little camera.
2017 -- Fans of NikCollection were distraught when Google announced that they would no longer support the software. Fortunately, DxOLabs took over and breathed new life into the ultimate suite of plug-ins.
2017 -- When DxO Labs decided that the 12th version of DxO OpticsPro would include UPointTM, the fantastic local selection technology found in NikCollection, it felt time to give the flagship software a new name. DxOPhotoLab was born.
2020 -- Using the millions of samples already in their huge OpticsModules database, the French company trained an AI model specialized in images. The result was DeepPRIME, a revolution in noise reduction and detail extraction.
2021 -- DxOLabs made their pioneering noise reduction and unrivaled lens/camera profiles available as part of any workflow through the launch of DxOPureRaw.
2024 -- DxO has won numerous awards -- 10 from TIPA and 6 from EISA. In 2024, DxOPhotoLab7 won its fifth consecutive TIPA award thanks to its unsurpassed levels of quality, consistency and control.
2024 -- DeepPRIMEXD2 is the culmination of years of research into the Raw image pipeline by experts in their fields. It makes DxOPureRaw4 the industry standard and the essential first step in any ambitious Raw workflow.
