In a blog entry, Camera Bits has announced the release of a limited public beta version of Photo Mechanic that runs natively on Apple silicon. The beta is a universal binary build of Photo Mechanic and Photo Mechanic for Ventura and later macOS versions.
"As noted many times, Photo Mechanic has run very fast under Rosetta 2 emulation because it is not a processor-intensive application," the post notes. "The read-write speed of the disk drive where photos are being edited is typically the main 'bottleneck' for Photo Mechanic performance. And, initially, the Apple Silicon version felt no faster than the emulated version, but our developers have since found some optimizations that have improved the speed significantly. We believe there may be more optimization to come with more development time."
The limited public beta is available only to those with current subscriptions or a perpetual license purchased after Mar. 11.
Camera Bits notes that while the build has undergone internal testing, it comes with no guarantees and should only be used on copies of files. This build will expire at the end of July.
