Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?
So we're pleased to present the 559th in our series of Saturday matinees today: Paris, the Capital of Sports.
This 1:42 video shows photographers Franck Fife, Stefano Rellandini and Joel Saget photographing French athletes hoping to win Olympic gold this July and Augustin Paris. And where better to warm up for that than in some of the most famous Parisian locations?
Rellandini, who came up with the idea, and his two other colleagues work for the Agence France-Presse, the French news agency funded by the French government. They took the athletes to the Louvre Museum, Sainte-Chapelle and the National Library of France, among other locations, to pose them in action shots.
After a quick montage of several of the 25 venues, we see Nikola Karabatic simulate handball in the Louvre, Laetitia Guapo dribble between her legs in the Galerie Vivienne, Dianne Parry bounce a tennis ball in the National Library and paralympic long jumper Dimitri Pavade leaping around Sainte-Chapelle. Each segment ends with a dramatic still of the athlete.
"The idea was to take them out of the stadium and take a tourist tour of the emblematic places of Paris," explained Saget.
And, as you'll see in the video, have a little irreverent fun doing it.
