In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Hurricane Beryl, The Bikeriders, scanning 1,000 slides, the Pixii Max, Instant Ink and an Affinity sale.

  • The Associated Press has updated photos of the destruction caused by Hurricane Beryl. "It decimated Caribbean islands like Barbados and Jamaica, with a pair of islands in St. Vincent and the Grenadines almost entirely destroyed. It slammed into Mexico's Yucatan peninsula on Friday and struck Texas by Monday, each time regaining its strength over water."
  • Magnum Gallery presents an online exhibition of Danny Lyon's series The Bikeriders in which he rode with the Chicago Outlaws from 1965 to 1967. "Through his unfiltered and intimate portraits, Lyon captures the essence of this rebellious subculture, shining a light on the reckless spirit that defined The Bikeriders."
  • Heidi Volpe talks to Seth Beck about scanning over 1,000 slides from his parents for his book 1974, the Pacific Coast Trail. "It was a struggle, just like the hike, but it also came with a real feeling of accomplishment," he says.
  • In Pixii Max Announced (If Only It Had...), Mike Johnston covers the full-frame version of the APS-C camera that takes rangefinder camera lenses in Leica M mount.
  • Christopher Harper reports HP will discontinue its Instant Ink service later this year. "The service will no longer be available to new customers. This will not affect existing Instant Ink toner subscribers, only those new to the service," he quotes an HP representative. The move is apparently related to HP's discontinuation its inexpensive e-series LaserJets that have HP+ subscription requirements. Just a few days ago, we went through a laborious call with a patient HP service rep to transfer an HP Envy printer with an Instant Ink subscription that allows 10 free pages a month with free ink from one address to another. Something you can't do online.
  • Affinity is offering a Six-Month Free Trial of its photo editing, page layout, graphic design and illustration software. The offer applies even if you've previously tried Photo, Publisher or Designer before. Purchase price on sale for the suite is $82.99 for a license to run on any operating system or $34.99 each ($9.29 for iOS).

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
