In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Week in Pictures, Cyprus, Ukrainian Scouting in N.Y., Black Bear selfies warning, Canon layoffs, summer reading and printers.

  • The Associated Press showcases its Week in Pictures: Global curated by AP photo editor Anita Baca in Mexico City and photojournalist Fatima Shbair.
  • Jim Powell features images of the abandoned UN Buffer Zone in Cyprus. "The buffer zone contains abandoned homes, closed businesses and the disused Nicosia international airport, an enduring symbol of Turkey's invasion of Cyprus half a century ago after a brief Greek-inspired coup," he writes.
  • In How Ukrainian Scouting Culture Thrives in the Woods of Western New York State, Andrea Wenglowskyj revisits Novyi Sokil with her camera. "I was a camper there in the 1980s and '90s and experienced all of this exactly," she writes. "As I've visited with my camera as an adult, I have learned about the unwavering commitment to maintaining this beautiful space and the arduous work it entails."
  • Richard Luscombe reports Florida Police Tell People to Stop Taking Selfies With 'Depressed' Black Bear. A Facebook post by the Walton county sheriff’s office warned, ""Onlookers were trying to take selfies with the bear and he's clearly not in the mood for pictures. The bear has shown signs of severe stress."
  • In Canon Throws Out Baby With Bathwater, Mike Johnston bemoans recent layoffs in the company's Melville, N.Y., headquarters, including Rudy Winston, who stepped into Chuck Westfall's shoes. "The cynical thought occurred to me that maybe Rudy was at too high a range in payscale or was about to qualify for some level of pension/retirement," he writes. Or took a buyout. He links to a PetaPixel story on it and Thom Hogan's commentary.
  • What Am I Reading This Week, This Summer? Kirk Tuck asks himself. Quite a bit, it turns out.
  • A Reddit poster asks What Printer Do You Have? Lots of Epsons, Canons, even a few DNPs in the replies.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
