In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Day Two of the Olympics, Reuters best Olympics shots, spiders, Death Row survivors, debate media visuals, DreamCon and the Nikon 58mm f0.95 Noct.
- The Associated Press presents images from the second day of the Paris Olympics. It has a hub page with ongoing coverage if you can't wait for the daily roundup.
- Not to be outdone, Reuters showcases its Best Photos From the Paris Olympics: Day 2.
- Kate Mothes features Maria Fernanda Cardoso's Spiders of Paradise, organized with the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia to show the diversity of the species. The eyes have it.
- Magali Duzant discusses Iranian photographer Enayat Asadi's series Survivors of Death Row. "Asadi's black and white portraits are haunting," she writes. "They capture men who appear to live in a form of limbo, saved from death but not necessarily welcomed back to the land of the living."
- In The Most Cringeworthy Media Visuals After Biden's Nightmare Debate, Michael Shaw focuses on the media fallout and the visual framing of the first 2024 presidential debate. "What a horrible night for democracy," he writes, lamenting both the event and how it was covered.
- Kirk Tuck takes his "M240 + 35mm ZM lens" to DreamCon and comes home with shots of hot cars is provocative skins. "Most of the cars were lowered and a peek inside a few engine compartments showed that the guts of the cars had been tweaked for street racing," he writes.
- Jim Kasson summarizes his findings after testing the Nikon 58mm f0.95 Noct. "what’s not to like?" he asks. Well, price, size, weight and no autofocus, he notes. "Like the recently teased 1000+ horsepower Corvette ZR-1, it is intended by its manufacturer to make people feel good when they buy lesser products," he adds. But he might rent one.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
