In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Olympics, Destination Downtown, Gail Devers, using natural with artificial light and Lensbaby refurbs.
- NPR curates Our Favorite Olympics Pictures so far. The Guardian adds its Day Seven photos. And the Associated Press has its Olympic Highlights too.
- Destination Downtown displays 8,000 never-before-seen black-and-white photographs of people captured on San Francisco sidewalks from the 1950s to the 1980s in a ground-floor window of the Flood Building. The exhibit was curated from 1.3 million negatives rescued from an archive in upstate New York. "Many of the souvenir-style photos were taken around Powell and Market streets, precisely where they are being displayed -- and much of the architecture in the area remains almost exactly as it was 60 or 70 years ago, right down to the lampposts," writes Astrid Kane.
- Joe McNally remembers Photographing the Olympian in the first of a multi-part series. "In 1996, I photographed the U.S. Olympic team -- in the nude," he writes. Gail Devers, however, was having none of it.
- In Combining Natural and Artificial Light for Still Life Photography, Julie Powell shows how to elevate your still life and food shots by adding a little artificial light to the scene.
- Lensbaby is offering up to 50 percent discounts of its Like-New Refurbs of lenses, optics and Omni products.
