In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Olympic competition, natural light, proprietary batteries, Memory Station, Lyrak and About This Image.
- John Windmill curates images of the Olympic competition in Hoops and Loops on Day 14. The Associated Press showcases its collection of Day 13 moments, as well. But Reuters may have one of yesterday's Best Photos of all.
- Dahlia Ambrose features 23 Stunning Images Captured Using Natural Light. "Master natural light photography and you are assured of some pretty special images," she writes.
- Kirk Tuck discusses The Achilles Heel of Classic Digital Cameras. Well, any digital camera. But we suspect he means older ones. And that would be the proprietary battery. It's an essential but transitory cog in the digital wheel. What happens when replacements are no longer available? We've actually got a few old Sony digicams like that. We can get maybe three shots before the charge dissipates. But, you know, three shots is great (to mangle a phrase from King of Hearts referring to minutes-left-to-live instead of shots).
- Vivid-Pix has announced a free trial version of its $199.99 Memory Station scanning software. The trial version lets you restore and create five video stories from images already on your computer.
- Lara Carretero takes a look at Lyrak, a new social media app for photographers. "Lyrak is already on its way to our phones and it promises us an audience, some sort of income and even the possibility of selling our work straight through the app," she writes.
- Nidhi Hebbar details New Ways to Access 'About This Image', Google's new tool "to quickly get context on images that you see wherever you come across them." It's rolling out this month to Circle to Search and Google Lens.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
