In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Mount Etna, Johnston's new work, Eric Melzer, AI-generated claims and a copyright suit against AI image generators.
- In Lava and Ash Spew From Italy's Mount Etna Volcano, Reuters documents the recent activity of Europe's most active volcano.
- Mike Johnston introduces his New Work in monochrome on Flickr, noting, "It's tough to get the tones right."
- Suzanne Sease features The Play Project, the personal project of Eric Melzer. During the pandemic, he says,"I challenged myself to build a photographic project around outdoor fun within a five-mile radius of where I live. That took me to the Peavey Park basketball courts in Minneapolis about a mile from my house."
- In Why False Claims That a Picture of a Kamala Harris Rally Was AI-Generated Matter, Jude Joffe-Block discusses the issue with Hany Farid, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley who specializes in forensic images. "'This is an example where just the mere existence of deepfakes and generative AI allows people to deny reality,' Farid said. 'You don't like the fact that Harris-Walz had such a big crowd? No problem. Photos are fake. Videos are fake. Everything's fake.'"
- Ashley Belanger reports Artists Claim 'Big' Win in Copyright Suit Fighting AI Image Generators. "In an order on Monday, U.S. District Judge William Orrick denied key parts of motions to dismiss from Stability AI, Midjourney, Runway AI and DeviantArt," she writes. "The court will now allow artists to proceed with discovery on claims that AI image generators relying on Stable Diffusion violate both the Copyright Act and the Lanham Act, which protects artists from commercial misuse of their names and unique styles."
