In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at World Photography Day, Reuters, Ocean Photographer of the Year, turning 15 in a Mexican hospital, the Arizona desert, Bucharest, color filters and optical finders.

  • In Six Photographers Share Insights on the Evolution of Photography, the Phoblographer celebrates World Photography Day. Nilofer Khan presents images and commentary from Ira Block, Phil Penman, Brian Smith, Tony Gale, Ian Pettigrew and Jen Rozenbaum.
  • Reuters presents 22 stunning Pictures of the Day.
  • Kate Mothes showcases This Year's Ocean Photographer of the Year Finalists. "Co-presented by Oceanographic Magazine and Blancpain Ocean Commitment, the annual competition invites amateur and professional photographers from around the world to share images showcasing the spectacular wildlife, cultures, scientific inquiry and conservation efforts in and around our oceans," she writes.
  • Associated Press photographer Aurea Del Rosario documents How a Mexico City Hospital Transforms Into a Coming-of-Age Celebration for Its Patients. "Whether the young patients are in treatment for a serious disease or have overcome cancer, the hospital celebrates the coming-of-age of these teenagers. After going through expensive treatments, some families can't afford to pay for a party -- with the hospital providing them an alternative," writes Mariana Martínez Barba. At no charge.
  • Magali Duzant features images of the Arizona desert from Where the Edges Vanish by Serge J-F. Levy. "I realized that the photographs where I had an idea of what a landscape photograph was supposed to be were failing but when I was spontaneous and walking without an agenda that was it," he says.
  • In Stopping Time Again, Stockholm-based photographer Joakim Kocjancic explores Bucharest in black and white for a planned photo book.
  • It may sound a little esoteric but Mike Johnston's discussion of Color Filters on Converted Monochrome Sensors is instructive (a rare virtue). "The point for most photographers is not to learn and master every technique, it's to develop and master their own," he writes. "What that is will depend on you, the depth of your dedication and your own visual concerns." One thing we learned was the difference between Hoya and Tiffen filters. For extra credit, he has also added More Selected Comments on 'New Work'.
  • In Testing a New Optical Finder, Kirk Tuck discusses several models covering wide angle lenses including a $60 TTArtisan, an EVF-2 (from Olympus, we assume) and an old Leica option.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
