In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at 9/11, Jennifer S. Altman, the debate, Polaroid x Magnum, Joerg Daiber, Lee Miller, medium format and sacred ground.
- Reuters features 23 Defining Images From the 9/11 Attacks when hijacked jetliners crashed into the World Trade Center killing nearly 3,000 people.
- How a Photographer Found Peace After 9/11, Chris Gampat interviews photojournalist Jennifer S. Altman about covering the attack on the World Trade Center.
- Reuters features 22 photos of The Harris vs. Trump Debate including a few of groups watching it.
- Polaroid x Magnum "features the photographic approach and craft of renowned Magnum photographers Jim Goldberg, Newsha Tavakolian and Enri Canaj, known for their deep, empathetic storytelling and commitment to capturing real life in all its complexity." This time using instant film.
- Kate Mothes invites you to Flit Through 'Miniature' Bavarian Alps in This Aerial Tilt-Shift Exploration by Joerg Daiber. "Tilt alters the focal plane and the shift effect changes an image's perspective, making vast landscapes appear like models or toys," she writes.
- Judith Mackrell expands on Lee Miller and the Female Journalists Who Broke Battlefield Rules. "When Miller entered Dachau, just hours after the concentration camp was liberated, it took all her professional control to document its incomprehensible evils, from its piles of skeletal corpses to its “medical” torture chamber and the place where its prisoners were murdered," she writes. Along with the movie Lee starring Kate Winslet as the photographer, a major show of Miller's work is scheduled at Tate Britain in London from Oct. 2, 2025.
- In Should I Buy a Medium Format Digital Camera? Jim Kasson covers the advantages and disadvantages of moving up from a full-frame dSLR (which, he says, is where you should go if you're using a smartphone now).
- Tim Lambert revisits where The Sacred Ground where Flight 93 crashed on his land. "A field once scarred by a smoldering crater, but now a living tribute to the 40 passengers and crew who likely saved the U.S. Capitol and hundreds of lives through their attempts to retake the cockpit," he describes the place.
