In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Samantha Hurley, wildfires, Astronomy Photographer of the Year, oddest photos, working, Beyond the Bolex and arrests for Jan. 6 assault on photographer.
- In What a Blind Photographer Saw at the Paralympics (gift link) Samantha Hurley, a photographer and a journalism student at the University of Georgia, describes how a camera helps her cope with albinism. "The more pictures I take, the more I appreciate about the visual world," she writes. Her favorite shot from the Paralympics? "It's the moment just after an Italian sprinter proposed to his girlfriend, tears in her eyes," she posts on Instagram.
- In As Wildfires Burn in California, Firefighters Work to Squelch the Flames, the Associated Press documents the destruction in southern California. Meanwhile, Gabrielle Canon reports Burned-Out Firefighters Are Fleeing the U.S. Forest Service. The firefighters cite "decades of wage theft and job misclassification" as nearly half of them have quit in the last three years.
- Royal Museums Greenwich reveals its Astronomy Photographer of the Year winners. In addition to the overall winner, there were 11 category winners.
- Reuters showcases Our Oddest Photos of the Week. Don't worry, there are only 12. There are 20 of its Best Pictures of the Week.
- Kirk Tuck muses on The Contrast Between Work and an Open-Ended, Freeform Schedule of Not Working.
- PBS has broadcast Beyond the Bolex, in which a "young filmmaker discovers a treasure trove of family artifacts and unravels mysteries surrounding her visionary great-grandfather," who invented the Bolex 16mm movie camera. The hour-long film is available for streaming or purchase on Amazon.
- The Associated Press reports Two Brothers Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting Photographer on Jan. 6. "David Walker, 49, of Delran, New Jersey and Philip Walker, 52, of Upper Chichester, Pennsylvania, also are charged with stealing a camera from the photographer during the 6 January 2021 attack," he writes. "Court records don't name the photographer or identify her employer, but New York Times spokesperson Danielle Rhoades Ha confirmed that the affidavit refers to staff photographer Erin Schaff, who wrote about her experience at the Capitol."
