In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at AP's photos of the week, 20 photos from The Guardian, Canon's discontinued Speedlites, Rahul Machvigar, LensCulture's emerging talent awards and Michaela Mabinty DePrince.

  • The Associated Press shares its Week in Pictures: Global curated by Michael Sohn, based in Berlin.
  • Jim Powell showcases The Week Around the World in 20 Pictures, including the evacuation of Pokrovsk, wildfires in California, the presidential debate in Philadelphia and Typhoon Yagi.
  • Nilofer Khan looks into Canon's Speedlite EL-1 and EL-100 Discontinuation. Supply chain issues are to blame for the Speedlite EL-1 situation, Canon said.
  • Grace Holiday presents Rahul Machvigar's Best Phone Photo, five boys playing at Jari Mari Hill by Mubai International Airport. "These boys all had a dream to sit in a plane themselves one day," he says. "Not necessarily even to be the pilot, just to experience flying."
  • LensCulture is now accepting entries for its Emerging Talent Photography Awards."We're looking for authentic voices and innovative approaches, whether you're exploring new narratives, experimenting with form or reimagining traditional genresy," the editors explain. "This is your chance to step into the international spotlight and join a worldwide community dedicated to elevating the art of photography." Deadline is Oct. 16.
  • Lizzie Tucker curates images from the life of Michaela Mabinty DePrince, the trailblazing Sierra Leonean-American ballerina who has died at 29. Her sisterMia DePrince wrote, "From the very beginning of our story back in Africa, sleeping on a shared mat in the orphanage, Michaela (Mabinty) and I used to make up our own musical theater plays and act them out. We created our own ballets. When we got adopted, our parents quickly poured into our dreams and arose the beautiful, gracefully strong ballerina that so many of you knew her as today. She was an inspiration."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
