In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Emmys Red Carpet, Christoffer Relander, sharp lenses with weak AA filters, two compact cameras and lens design.
- Alyx Gorman presents images from the Emmys 2024 Red Carpet. Reuters adds 41 photos of Style From the Emmy Awards Red Carpet from a slightly different angle.
- Grace Ebert features Christoffer Relander's portraits from his We Are Nature series. "Melding portraits with leaves, landscapes and the occasional cat, the Finnish photographer superimposes human silhouettes with lush environments to explore the inherent connections between the two," she writes.
- In Micro-Contrast Versus Moiré, Kirk Tuck writes "The sharper the lens the more likely it is to excite smaller and smaller optical frequencies and to create specific areas of moiré." He ran into that wall recently with a Sigma Art 85mm f1.4lens on a Panasonic S5. "Panasonic and Leica have both made cameras whose sensors are covered with weak AA filters in order to deliver higher amounts of fine detail. And it's great until a subject is rendered super-sharp and the subject happens to be wearing nylon, rayon or some other variation of polyester cloth."
- Thom Hogan found his Initial and Long-Term Impressions changing as he used both the Fujifilm X100VI and the Leica D-Lux8 on safari recently.
- Nilofer Khan reports on the engineering decisions that make the new Canon RF 28-70mm f2.8 IS STM both high quality and affordable.
More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
