In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Luigi Ghirri, a Carl Zeiss 35mm lens, Willie Velazquez, Z-mount autofocus lenses, definitions of a photo, the iOS 18 Photos app redesign and sports lighting in the studio.
- Elena Goodinsons presents images from new exhibition of the work of Luigi Ghirri, "a pioneer whose far-reaching ideas on photography and its role in modern culture remain influential today." Luigi Ghirri: Viaggi:Photographs 1970--1991 runs through Jan. 26, 2025 at Museo d'arte della Svizzera italiana in Lugano.
- Kirk Tuck presents a few images taken with his new Carl Zeiss 35mm ZM f2.0 Biogon lens. "It was much cheaper than the new Leica equivalent," he writes. "I like it."
- Chris Gampat reviews You're Not Alone by Willie Velazquez. "Willie is basically giving you a bunch of prints for $23," he writes.
- In Lens Information Updated, Thom Hogan speculates, "Thus, we're rapidly approaching—or have passed the mark but it can't yet be verified—having 100 autofocus lenses available for the Z-mount. We'll likely be over 150 by the end of 2025."
- In Let's Compare Apple, Google, and Samsung's Definitions of 'A Photo', Nilay Patel quotes Samsung, Google and Apple representatives on their company's concept of what a photo is. "I don't know how this will resolve itself," he writes, "but the one thing I do know is that our understanding of photography is going to get a lot more confusing before it gets any better."
- In We Think a Picture Should Be of Something That Actually Happened, Derrick Story compares how Google and Apple think about photography in his latest podcast. It also includes a segment on how to revert the iOS 18 Photos app redesign.
- In Photoshop World and the Complete Photographer, Joe McNally tackles sports lighting in the studio.
