In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Bird Photographer of the Year, Joseph Michael Lopez, Sebastião Salgado, leading lines, Ed French murder verdict and CompuServe.
- Kate Mothes showcases winners of the Bird Photographer of the Year Competition selected from a pool of more than 23,000 submissions.
- In New Eyes on New York features a few of Joseph Michael Lopez's two decades of black-and-white images of New York from a new book.
- In The Book by Sebastião Salgado That You'll Savor Slowly, Chris Gampat reviews Kuwait. "His book celebrating the photographs he made in Kuwait are something that no photojournalist has ever been able to make or publish," he writes. "They are both documentary and fine art."
- Rob Wood provides 19 examples of Composing With Leading Lines using roads and paths. "We instinctively follow these lines to see where they go -- the lines are leading our gaze toward the subject in the image," he writes.
- Jury Finds Pair Guilty of First-Degree Murder of City Photographer in 2017. "Fantasy Decuir shot dead 71-year-old Ed French at Twin Peaks scenic overlook before her accomplice, Lamonte Mims, kicked the dying man. They then traveled to the city's SOMA district to fence the victim's camera." They will be sentenced on Dec 6.
- Michael De Bonis remembers 45 years ago CompuServe Connected the World Before the World Wide Web.
