In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Comedy Wildlife awards, Buffalo, Pañamarca, Olga Steinepreis, Take Control of Photos, Winnie Au, TentBox and hurricanes.
- Finalists for the Nikon Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards have been announced. Forty individual entries, four portfolio entries and three videos that made the cut.
- Dorrell Merritt looks at Magnum photographer Gregory Halpern's images of Buffalo, N.Y., In the U.S. Rust Belt. "It is a place full of obstacles and hardship: relentless snowfall that lasts for months on end; a decline of industry and population in the city's postwar era; a lack of both infrastructure and opportunity," he writes. "Halpern spent his many planned visits to his Buffalo-based father armed with the revered hulk of a Pentax 67 camera, restricted to 12 exposures with each precious roll of film."
- Kate Mothes presents images of A Remarkable Painted Throne Room at Pañamarca, an ancient Peruvian site. "This year, archaeologists uncovered a pillared room containing evidence of its use by a high-status female leader," she writes. "Scenes depict the powerful woman receiving visitors in procession or seated upon a throne."
- Ellis Tree explores Olga Steinepreis's self portraits from her series I've Had a Dream... "The series began with a few individual works that I initially created to process my feelings of being overwhelmed by the endless cycle of daily chores and the pressure to be a perfect mother," she says. "As I continued working, I realised that these images were all connected by a common theme: the struggle to balance personal identity with the demanding roles of motherhood."
- Jason Snell has released the fourth edition of his $14.99 Take Control of Photos, which introduces the features of Apple's Photos app on Mac, iPad and iPhone with advice on navigating the interface, editing your images, searching your library, syncing with iCloud Photos, sharing photos with others and creating photo books. "There's stuff in this edition about the new Collections views, including People and Pets groups, Recent Days, the upgraded search system and more," he writes. "There will also be a free update to this edition later this fall that covers the stuff Apple rolled out with the iPhone 16, as well as any breaking Apple Intelligence features."
- Suzanne Sease features The Cone of Shame, the personal project of Winnie Au. The images are from a new book of that name. "I wanted to take that post-surgery humiliation -- that saddest moment for every pet -- and twist it into something beautiful and majestic," Au says in her book. "I wanted to take the shame out of the cone."
- Derrick Story has an in-depth hands-on review of his $1,199 TentBox Go Roof Top Tent."Being able to camp anywhere I can park the car goes beyond convenience. It's also a secret weapon for photography," he writes.
- Reuters curates historical images of The Most Destructive Hurricanes in American History.
