In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Maggie Smith, AP's week, Phase One, AI landscape contest, Douglas Marshall, the Oakland A's, Print AI, the "AI-generated" label, a budget, Fred Lyon and free Covid-19 tests.

  • The Guardian celebrates the life of Maggie Smith in pictures. "Dame Maggie Smith, who has died aged 89, had an incredibly varied career as a star of stage, screen and TV -- from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie to Downton Abbey to Harry Potter."
  • The Associated Press showcases its most compelling image in its Week in Pictures: Global
  • Phase One has introduced its XC Camera with the wide-angle Rodenstock HR Digaron-S 40mm lens:

There is only one reason why Oakland is leaving and that's because owner John Fisher, who inherited his family's Gap fortune, decided to take a logic-defying leap eastward in what seems like a lose-lose deal for almost every party involved: the owner, Oakland's fans, future Vegas A's fans, the city of Oakland, the city of Las Vegas, Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association.

  • HP has introduced Print AI, to eliminate common challenges from printer setup to support. The first feature. Perfect Output. "ensures prints look perfect every time" and is available now via a beta program.
  • In Rethinking Photography in the Age of AI, Paul Melcher writes, "Ironically, the very photographers who manipulate reality through their craft are resistant to a label [AI-generated] that acknowledges this manipulation."
  • Jason Row has a few suggestions for Photography on a Budget. "There are really no great barriers to getting great photos," he writes.
  • SFGate photographer Douglas Zimmerman interviewed Fred Lyon for two hours shortly before Lyon died at the age of 97 in 2022. "A complete photographer should be able to visualize anything or walk up to anything that he's never seen before and go right to it and make a competent picture," he said.
  • You can now place an order for four Free At-Home Covid-19 Tests. Orders start shipping Sept. 30.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
