In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the week, AOP awards, Kevin Mazur, the Leica Q3 43mm, Data Mining Permissions field and artists' palettes.

  • Jim Powell presents The Week Around the World in 20 photographs.
  • Guy Lane showcases the Association of Photographers Awards winners. The awards recognize and promote professional excellence, technical ability and talent at all stages of a photographer's career.
  • Jacob Bernstein reveals The Secrets of the Ultimate Celebrity Photographer (gift link). That would be Kevin Mazur. "His motto -- 'Why wouldn't you want to make people look good?' -- helps explain how he became the John Singer Sargent of live-action digital photography, a go-to chronicler of rock gods and movie stars," he writes.
  • Kirk Tuck writes the new Leica Q3 43mm "is a camera nobody else is making. Not even close." But its price has people "walking around with such big chips on their shoulders." Nevertheless, "Bravo to Leica. Shame on the mindless naysayers."
  • Camera Bits has added a Data Mining Permissions Field to current builds of Photo Mechanic and Photo Mechanic Plus. This IPTC standard enables users to embed information to allow or deny permission for their images to be used in machine learning algorithms.
  • Kit Buchan presents photographs of Artists' Palettes as Works of Art from the book The Artist's Palette by Alexandra Loske, whose book pairs each artist's palette with one of their paintings.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
