In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Hurricane Helene, the Siena Photo Awards, Zihan Wei, Monarch butterflies, clouds Over Seneca, the slow mirrorless year and travel cameras.

Lost Lives and an Epic Crisis in North Carolina (gift link) documents the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The Associated Press has more images of the Extreme Swath of Destruction. And Reuters adds its Scenes From Helene's Aftermath.

  • Matt Fidler showcases a selection of winning and commended images from the 10th edition of the Siena Photo Awards in Italy.
  • In I Did Nothing Other Than Tell Them to Smile, Magali Duzant examines Zihan Wei's photos of her parents. "Starting with pranks and role-playing, she convinced her parents to take part in her work under the guise of making 'wedding photos.' Having none to start with, they acquiesced and a new dynamic developed, assisted by the camera," she writes.
  • Robin McKie reports on Spanish photographer Jaime Rojo's Campaign to Save the Monarch Butterfly. Wildlife Photographer of the Year, "This is one of the rare cases in conservation in which the citizens have something to do and that will make all the difference," the Wildlife Photographer of the Year says.
  • In Clouds Over Seneca, Mike Johnston stops to take a black-and-white shot of a fog bank, but he also includes a color shot of him taking the shot, captured by a friend who's a painter.
  • Thom Hogan explains why it's been A Slow Year in Mirrorless.
  • LensRentals lists the five Best Travel Cameras for 2024. Or you could just rely on your smartphone.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
