In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Comet of the Century, Vincenzo Pagliuca, PhEST, Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo, Poltergeist, Herlinde Koelbl, a disturbing offer, Anthony Smith, the Fujifilm X-T1, Sequoia vs. Time Machine Synology NAS, Tuck quits (again) and Ward Christensen.

  • Arnel Hecimovic curates images of the Comet of the Century, which is not expected to return for 80,000 years. Chandelis Duster explains How You Can See It.
  • Kate Mothes presents Vincenzo Pagliuca's images of Singular and Solitary Houses in the Apennines. “Ever since I was a child, I have had a strong attraction to empty and lonely houses, which are quite common in the Italian hinterland,” Pagliuca says.
  • Sarah Gilbert showcases images from PhEST, southern Italy's foremost photo festival. The international festival of photography and art is at various venues in Monopoli, Italy, until Nov. 3.
  • Magali Duzant reviews The Fish Dies by Its Mouth, a new photobook by Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo. "Photographers were always documenting the horrors and terror. I prefer to work together and create new imagery, not only thinking about the past and the horror and pain but also trying to look forward to new possibilities," Escobar-Jaramillo says.
  • With Poltergeist, Harold Davis demonstrates "you don't have to travel to make cool images and sometimes the best opportunities are where you live (or next door or at least close-by)."
  • German photographer Herlinde Koelbl is this year's recipient of the Leica Hall of Fame Award.
  • In Behind the Scenes, Thom Hogan quotes a disturbing offer for posting a five-star review of lens on Amazon.
  • Heidi Volpe interviews Anthony Smith of Powder Magazine.
  • In My Old Fuji, Mike Johnston applies the lessons he learned on his first real estate job to his second. He also enthuses about the color from his Fujifilm X-T1 and Adobe Camera Raw.
  • Sequoia Time Machine Synology NAS Keeps Disconnecting, reports one user on the Apple community forum. No obvious culprit but a few suggestions.
  • I'm Done Writing the Blog, writes Kirk Tuck, who just started Ground Zero Art. Seems like the third time he's promised to stop posting about photography.
  • We note the passing of Ward Christensen, who created and the XMODEM protocol for file transfers and launched the first bulletin board system in 1978 , which launched the online age.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
