Monday we got a ride to Oliveria Engineering in Berkeley, where Glenn Oliveria had agreed to work on our 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Veloce. While we waited for the car to be towed from San Francisco, we had a look around.
It's a particularly charming spot, formerly residential, near Aquatic Park, which runs along Highway 80. Oliveria told us he had the building built in 1980 on the site of an old building that had been demolished because it needed something like $5,000 in plumbing work. He thought it might've been the same design as the house still standing next door. Which recently sold for over $2M.
We took some photos while we waited in vain for our car to arrive.
We had to sue to get it back from the guy who, for 13 years, not only failed to complete work on it but lost and damaged parts. He settled before we went to trial, entirely on our terms. But on the day we had the truck come to take possession, he gave the tow truck driver an increasingly smaller set of hoops to jump through, ultimately refusing to release the vehicle.
We contacted our attorney who contacted all the other attorneys. As our attorney put it, there were no stipulations attached to the release of the vehicle in the judgement filed with the court. So release it to the tow truck driver.
Our ride that day dropped us off at the hospital so we could check in on Joyce. It's been a tough week. She was misdiagnosed in the ER and when treatment failed to help, she was discharged. We had to appeal the discharge as it involved sending her to a skilled nursing facility out of the Bay area. And our appeal was mysteriously denied. So we were appealing the denial.
But then a new doctor took the case and canceled the discharge, treating her under a new diagnosis. Still not going well, though.
Yes, it's been a tough week. But we had a pleasant morning at Oliveria Engineering where the past is brought back to life.
