In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Valencia, giant mythological puppets, Raphaël Neal, Iceland, Close-Up Photographer of the Year, Anna and Jordan Rathkopf, and a new approach to cameras.
- Nicole Werbeck shows the Devastation in Valencia after flash flooding in the eastern part of the country has left at least 70 people dead.
- Alan Taylor features 18 photos of Giant Mythological Puppets staging a show in Toulouse.
- In Fright Club, Mee-Lai Stone feature the ghoulish self-portriats of Raphaël Neal. "I wanted my photographs to be both beautiful and repulsive, at times scary and even ridiculous," Neal says.
- In Land of Fire and Ice, Reuters presents 16 photos of "Iceland's otherworldly landscape."
- Kate Mothes highlights the shortlist for Close-Up Photographer of the Year. "From flowing kelp to baby animals to itty bitty arachnids, the images highlight the diversity of life on our planet in fantastic detail," she writes.
- Sophie Wright reviews HER2: The Diagnosed, the Caregiver and Their Son by Anna and Jordan Rathkopf.
- In Tap the Shut and Take a Pho, Thom Hogan suggests, "It's time for a new approach to cameras. Not one that is bogged down in promulgating the film SLR to its extreme, but one that is image centric, direct and communicative." Like phones.
