In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at 2024 in Review, a lava field, Jeff Keller, image handling Shortcuts, Turnley print sale, Nikon Heralbony Z fc, image sensor developments and Cyber Monday.

  • The 2024 in Review photo collections are already up with yet a month to go in 2024. The Associated Press and Reuters both have jumped the gun.
  • Marco di Marco illustrated The Scale of a Lava Field in his image of the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland. "I think this photo works because the foreground is filled with the developing lava field and several lava flows lead the eye toward the eruptive fissure," he writes.
  • Jeff Keller reveals Five Things I Learned in Twenty-Five Years of Reviewing Cameras.
  • A Macscripter poster has contributed a few Image Handling Shortcuts, including one that uses ExifTool. The scripts are written for Apple's Shortcuts app but easily incorporated into Keyboard Maestro macros.
  • Peter Turnley is having a Paris Holiday Print Sale with 45 prints of his work until Dec. 4. Prints are 12x16-inch, signed, traditional silver gelatin fiber prints starting at $495 for one. Even if you're not shopping, it makes a nice slide show.
  • Nikon Inc. has announced the limited-edition release of its Nikon Heralbony Z fc model for the U.S. market that features four exterior designs created by contracted artists from Heralbony Co., Ltd. These models were previously only available in select markets outside of the U.S. "Heralbony, a Japanese company, challenges preconceptions of disability through art with its extensive collection created by neurodiverse artists. Sharing a vision to 'Radiate Your Color,' Nikon partnered with Heralbony to make this camera more than just a tool for capturing moments -- it's a means of self-expression and individuality," the company said.
  • Thom Hogan wonders, What Happened to Image Sensors? "It's not that there aren't any new image sensor technologies working their way through the channels," he writes. "It's that they're still early in their development and not yet proven cost effective enough that they'll produce U.S.$1,000 to $5,000 consumer cameras."
  • We're finding Cyber Monday to be exactly the same deals as our Black Friday listings report. Which, for that matter, have been valid for a while and some of which may continue to the end of the year. We we're just going to leave them in one spot this year and avoid the free advertising. (And no, we won't be doing a gift guide.)

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
