The Bob & Diane Fund has announced photographer Jason Crowley as the 2024 grantee for his photography project A Tough Old Bird.
The yearly photography grant is to support visual storytelling about Alzheimer's and dementia.
"My grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2019, at the age of 92," he writes. "At the time, I knew very little about the disease. The idea of seeing her was overwhelming, but once I was with her, I felt at ease.
"We spent that time together taking pictures, and soon I started taking photos of both my mom and grandmother. Whenever I'm home, I'm always visiting with them. We call my grandmother 'nana', my mom calls her 'a tough old bird.'"
Near the end of his essay, Crowley explains what he's after: "My dream for this work is to highlight the extraordinary hardship of caring for elderly patients with neurodegenerative disorders, and how those disorders change familial relationships in unexpected ways."
We're pleased to be able to present a selection of images from A Tough Old Bird. The project, complete with Crowley's essay, can be seen on the Bob & Diane Fund Grant page.
