In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Nigeria's lithium mines, Iya Valley, symmetry and asymmetry, Anthony Friedkin, Portugal, LemsRentals's top rentals, Photobucket sued and a big internal SSD.
- The Associated Press documents Nigeria's Lithium Mines worked by children. "Nigeria has laws requiring basic education and prohibiting child labor, but enforcement is a challenge with many illegal mines in hard-to-reach areas," writes Taiwo Adebayo. "Corruption among regulatory and law enforcement officials is also a problem."
- In Iya Valley Sunrise, Harold Davis captures the view high above the Iya River in the mountainous and less-traveled region that is in the interior of Shikoku, Japan.
- Rob Wood announces Light Stalking's November photo contest winners on the theme of Symmetry and Asymmetry.
- In This Moment Will Never Happen Again, Stacy Suaya profiles Anthony Friedkin, who captured a powerful split second in LGBTQ history.
- Suzanne Sease features Portugal, the personal project of Dough Menuez. "From the lively streets of Lisbon, adorned with culture and a vibrant nightlife that attracted notable personalities like John Malkovich, to the romantic cobblestone streets of wine country, each corner of Portugal became a canvas for Doug's lens," she writes.
- LemsRentals lists it Top Rented Photo and Video Products of 2024.
- Ashley Belanger reports, Photobucket Was Sued Wednesday "after a recent privacy policy update revealed plans to sell users' photos -- including biometric identifiers like face and iris scans -- to companies training generative AI models."
- Howard Oakley asks, Do You Really Need a Big Internal SSD? "The most common economy that many make when specifying their next Mac is to opt for just 512-GB internal storage and save the $600 or so it would cost to increase that to 2-TB," he writes. "After all, if you can buy a 2 TB Thunderbolt 5 SSD for around two-thirds of the price, why pay more?"
