Friday Slide Show: Winter Whimsy Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

13 December 2024

We looked down the tracks and didn't see a streetcar coming. On the other hand, the third one was backed up going away from us. We took advantage of the delay to pop into the new;y-reopened (after a fire) Post Office to buy stamps so we could mail our Christmas cards.

The clerk asked us which Forever stamps we wanted. "Christmas," we told him. "Which one?" he asked. "We've got a lot of them."

"The most popular," we decided. We didn't want to waste time on a tour with a streetcar coming.

He grabbed these for us. "Winter Whimsy." A graphic treatment of four snowflakes. They are certainly generic enough not to offend anyone.

Featuring snowflakes in a digitally rendered design, the stamps evoke a beloved hand-cut paper craft with their perfect, delicate symmetry. Each stamp in the block of four includes a unique design in white, each contrasted against a solid color backaround: navy blue, teal, tan. or dark blue-green.

We thought we'd have a little fun with this "whimsy" so we scanned one side of the book at high resolution, cropped the four designs, played with a few variations that merged pairs of designs and brought them into Lightroom to resize and export them.

We've never seen a real snowflake. Just, uh, photographs.

So letting these run as a slide show is going to have to be our idea of a winter snowfall. "Digitally rendered," as the USPS puts it.
