In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the week in pictures, the fall of Damascus, Rachel Handlin, Queenie Cheen and Wilhelm Brasse.

  • The Associated Press showcases its Week in Pictures curated by photo editor Anita Baca and Assistant Director of Global Photo Production Courtney Dittmar.
  • Associated Press photographer Hussein Malla's image of an opposition fighter stepping on a broken bust of the late Syrian President Hafez Assad in Damascus illustrates The Fall of Damascus. "Entering Damascus was a special feeling for me because I have been blacklisted from working in the city since covering peaceful protests in Daraa in 2011 and later because I covered the rebels crossing from Turkey into northern Syria," he writes.
  • Kate Dwyer profiles Rachel Handlin in An Artist Who Has Something in Common With Her Subjects (gift link). Handlin msy br the first person with Down syndrome to receive an MFA and one of just a few to hold a bachelor's. Her first solo show features her portraits of others like her.
  • Grace Holliday presents The Violinist Returning Home at Night,, Queenie Cheen's best phone picture, shot on a Vivo X50. "It looked so glamorous, but it was exhausting," Cheen says of her subject and what it reminded her of.
  • Lily Tuck tells Scott Simon how her new novel The Rest Is Memory was sparked by s photograph of Czeslawa Kwoka, a 14-year-old Polish girl killed at Auschwitz concentration camp.
