Matinee: 'Vast Nature' Share This on LinkedIn   Tweet This   Forward This

14 December 2024

Saturday matinees long ago let us escape from the ordinary world to the island of the Swiss Family Robinson or the mutinous decks of the Bounty. Why not, we thought, escape the usual fare here with Saturday matinees of our favorite photography films?

So we're pleased to present the 582nd in our series of Saturday matinees today: Vast Nature.

This 7:54 video from Andrée Anna Thorpe includes both video clips and numerous stills from a 2024 photography trip to Antarctica.

"When I go out to photograph," she says, "I am looking for drama in many different ways. I don’t like drama in my life, but I love it in my images. I find the images more interesting to look at. I look for drama in the sky and in the moment. At the same time, I am looking for finesse into the feel of the image."

Andrée is a visual storyteller and landscape photographer, passionate about image making and teaching. For 11 years she has worked closely with several well-known photographers, not only assisting but co-teaching workshops all over the world. She is also a veteran of several expeditions visiting the Ross Sea, East Greenland, Melanesia and Madagascar.

In 2016 Andrée launched her own business focusing on teaching and is currently working on her Thousand Islands Farm documentary project, documenting the lives of the farmers in that part of the world.

"With my farm documentary work, I am hoping to make a change in the farmers' life and bring awareness on how invaluable are the farmers in our life," she says. "With my landscape work, I hope to bring joy when people look at my work."

Vast Nature is, in fact, eight minutes of just such joy.
