In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Southern Sky Astrophotography Exhibition, Love Hotel, smartphones vs. cameras, the Nikon Z f, screw-drive rumors and New Visions Photography Awards.

  • The Guardian presents a few stunning images from the Southern Sky Astrophotography Exhibition on display at the Sydney observatory until Feb. 1, 2025.
  • Kate Mothes features images of from the series Love Hotel shot in Japan by François Prost. "These venues have a very 'talkative' quality visually -- they're expressive in their design, reflecting aspects of local culture, values and even fantasies," Prost says. The hotels offer rooms at cheap rates for brief stays.
  • In Smartphones v. Cameras 2024 Edition, Thom Hogan suggests "everyone is comparing smartphone 'build-a-scene' with camera defaults." Smartphones build a JPEG from continually running sensor captures, using various machine-learned object detections. Meanwhile, dedicated camera images "are essentially 'taken at camera defaults.'" But, he notes, in both cases, "If you have all the data, you can always do better than a built-in automated process."
  • Chris Gampat liked the Nikon Z f Firmware Updates so much he bought the camera. "That means that it's a fine enough camera that brings me so much joy," he writes. With the exception of his Zeiss Loxia lenses.
  • In The Screw-Drive Rumors Return, Thom Hogan reports on a rumors of a new FTZ adapter for screw-drive Nikkor lenses (with no autofocus motor). "Nikon could come out with such a product," he writes. "Only the bean counters in Tokyo know whether or not they should, or not."
  • LensCulture celebrates 20 years of discovering photographic talent with its New Visions Photography Awards. Deadline for submissions is Jan. 15, 2025.

We've updated A Macro to Install ExifTool to be a bit more robust. More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
