In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at notable deaths, Radio City Rockettes, homelessness, Robert Frank, LensRentals' top sales and tips for smartphone photography.
- Reuters marks the Notable Deaths of 2024 in portraits.
- Julia Nikhinson captured the Radio City Rockettes performing their Parade of the Wooden Soldiers dance while working on a photo story about Christmas in New York. "This photo works because viewers are able to follow the line of the falling wooden soldiers through the frame -- only the reds, whites and yellows of the costumes popping out," she writes.
- Suzanne Sease feature Beyond the Margins, the personal project of Jason Knott on homelessness. "Shock, sadness and at times anger do not begin to describe how fragile our lives are and how quickly things can take a turn for the worse," he says. "The project sets out to document the journey of those I met revisiting the places where they slept rough on the streets and in many cases after a long personal battle, before finding their new homes."
- Celebrating the centennial of photographer Robert Frank's birth, Robert Frank: Mary's Book is on exhibit at MFA Boston through June 22, 2025. Created in 1949, the one-of-a-kind, handmade book is a personal scrapbook of photographs Frank made for Mary Lockspeiser, the woman who became his first wife.
- LensRentals reports its Top Sales for Photo & Video Products for the year.
- Jason Row lists Eight Tips for Better Smartphone Photography. They seem, in general, to advise circumventing built-in processing.
