In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at NPR's picks, Bad Santas, film simulations, photobooks and video generation tools.

  • NPR presents seven Great Global Photos From 2024.
  • Bad Santas is Fiona Duncan's best phone shot. "It was a few days before Christmas, back in 2018, and Duncan was dashing around Grosmont town centre, picking up last-minute essentials," Grace Holliday sets the scene. "I was slightly cursing the gates being closed," Duncan continues. "But then all these guys sauntered up and casually formed a line along the level-crossing barrier." They were doing a pub crawl along a seven- to eight-mile route and needed a little support.
  • Mike Johnston looks at Fujifilm Film Simulations after a reader describes how he uses them.
  • LensCulture lists 34 Favorite Photobooks of 2024. "We reached out to photography experts from around the globe and we asked them to recommend books that are their personal favorites from 2024," the editors explain.
  • Paul Melcher asks Who Needs a New Video Generation Tool? "The excitement around tools like Sora is both understandable and a bit overstated," he writes. "The current 'text-to-[everything]' phase of AI feels revolutionary, but it's a stepping stone, not the destination."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
