In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Astronomy Picture of the Day, sea nomads, LensRentals' best new products, an Anamorphic DeSqueeze Tool, Irish Coffee and Mac batteries.
- The Astronomy Picture of the Day is the Grand Spiral NGC 5643. "Some 55 million light-years distant, the galaxy extends for over 100,000 light-years, seen within the boundaries of the southern constellation Lupus."
- In Fishermen, Known as 'Sea Nomads,' Dive to Protect Ocean Life in Madagascar, Julie Bourdin and Sira Thierij take photos underwater for a conservation project to protect the Barren Isles, which have become a refuge for thousands of Vezo people.
- LensRentals lists its Best New Photo & Video Products. The list includes staff picks for best new camera and best new lens.
- A Reddit poster links to his Anamorphic DeSqueeze Tool to batch process DNGs adding "the Exif data Lightroom (and others) need to display them desqueezed in Library and Develop modules." The script relies on an ExifTool command using the -DefaultScale option.
- Craig Lee photographs Examiner reporter Natalia Gurevich] learning how to make Irish Coffee from John "Jedi" Jeide At the Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco.
- Howard Oakley compiles A Brief History of Mac Batteries. "Over this period of 35 years, Apple has operated various extended battery support schemes, and faced criticism over battery working life," he writes. "But in the long run, many of us have made increasing use of battery-powered Macs and they have transformed many lives."
