In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the auroras, Times Square ball drop, wildlife and eight still great cameras.

  • The Northern Lights Photographer of the Year collection from Capture the Atlas features images of the aurora in unexpected places where they've rarely (if ever) been photographed.
  • There have been a half dozen ball designs for the Times Square New Year's Eve Ball Drop since the tradition started in 1907. NPR has photos of a few of them.
  • Marc Muench takes up Where Wildlife Runs Free in words and pictures. "There is so much going on in the bush that there is never a dull moment," he writes. "Even when it seems quiet and some would become impatient while the lions are sleeping, there are birds chirping that signal other predators or hyenas approaching to steal a potential snack from the resting kings of the wild."
  • Nilofer Khan names Eight Great Old Cameras That Are Still Excellent. You may be surprised.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
