1 January 2025

Once again, we mark the obsolescence of last year's calendars despite their beautiful prints celebrating each month and herald the new year's promise of images yet unseen.

Which, you might say, is really frosting the cake. Because looking ahead into what 2025 promises, we can't say we see anything worth hanging a new calendar over.

Or so it seems to us this first clear if cold morning of the new year. But we dutifully put up our traditional reminder of what year it is.

At the weekly newsmagazine where we worked for 30 years, the publisher would put up a similar small note to remind everyone which year it was. Wisely, he put it up on the clock in the production area. He knew everyone looked at that clock several times an hour.

There's no avoiding the year at a magazine. Almost every page that isn't an ad has the date somewhere, starting with the cover. You want to make sure it's the current date, not a year ago. And this little note did that.

It was invaluable then and remains so now. It always reminds us to be in the present and look toward the future.

Which is where we plan to be six days a week in 2025.

P.S. If you set a copyright notice in your camera, take a moment before you start shooting to enter the new year. As it says on the Post-it note here, "It's 2024!"
